Here are some facts about insuring a convertible, together with the current cheapest convertibles to insure.

Are convertible cars more expensive to insure?

Although insuring a convertible car may be more expensive than its fixed roof version, it might be less expensive than you think. The trick is to shop around. Luckily, Girl Motor can save you that hassle - we'll find you a great deal from our wide panel of insurers.

Cheapest convertibles to insure*

  1. The Fiat 500C is a cheeky little convertible that must be on every lady's wish-list. Insurance wise, the car can be as low as Group 9 for some convertible models.
  2. How about the Citroen DS3 Cabrio 1.2 VTi DSign at insurance group 10? The full-length fabric sunroof may not satisfy your strictest notions of a cabriolet, but you can't deny this car's got an abundance of cool looks. Other models of this car do veer between Group 16 and Group 36, which will probably price you out of the running.
  3. The Smart Fortwo Cabrio might be the one for you if you don't venture outside the city much. Insurance groups range from 2 to 12 (15 for the electric model).
  4. Mini Convertibles are always a desirable option and start out at insurance group 14.
  5. The VW Beetle Cabriolet has a certain retro style that a great many ladies love. Insurance groups range from 15 to 38.
  6. The VW Golf Cabriolet 1.2 TSI S (2011 on) is beautifully built and handles well. Insurance is Group 15, not bad for a fun car of this spec but probably near the top of your range if you're on a strict budget.
  7. A fabric roll-back sunroof does not make a convertible in some eyes, but Citroen C1 Airscape models are cheap to insure, from groups 8 to 12 depending on the model. And with CO2 emissions less than 100g/km, this car is free to tax, too.

What are the disadvantages of a convertible car?

Insurance

From an insurance point of view, you might find that some insurers place a few restrictions on the policy cover. For example, on a sunny day it's not uncommon for drivers to park their convertible with the roof down. Now, this leaves your car vulnerable from a couple of angles. If it rains unexpectedly, your car is going to suffer rain damage to the interior. There's also a significant increase in the risk of theft. So you may find that your policy places some restrictions on claims in situations like this.

Soft-top convertibles are more likely to suffer from vandalism, which perhaps explains the rise in popularity of hard-top convertibles in recent years. Check that your policy covers vandalism to the roof and make sure the excess is at a level you can afford in the event of a claim.

Always read your policy wording carefully.

Maintenance

The maintenance costs for a convertible can be higher than that of a fixed roof car. If you are unlucky enough to have a problem with the roof you might be facing a large repair bill.

Wear and tear

The general wear and tear on the interior of a convertible car will be higher than its hard-top version owing to its exposure to the elements.

Re-sale

The re-sale factor can be a problem for convertible owners. The fact is that when buying a convertible you are reducing the pool of re-sale customers for your car significantly, as they aren't to everyone's taste.

Price

Prices of convertibles are at a more reasonable level than ever before as they become more mainstream.

Build quality

The build quality of these cars have come on leaps and bounds over the past few years, with an increase in demand. Manufacturers have responded to the increased market demand by making convertibles to a higher standard, with additional features and better build quality.

The fun factor!

You can't really put a price on this, but it's probably the biggest reason for buying a convertible. No surprise that swapping the sensible family MPV for a fun and flirty soft-top is the fantasy of many ladies!
