According to experts far more advanced vehicle security measures - making it in many cases near impossible for offenders to break in and steal cars - has more than attributed to the dramatic upsurge in the simpler, and more effectively tried and tested method of taking without consent. A Metropolitan Police spokesman offered this insight into the thinking's of the criminal mind;"If a potential thief sees two vehicles he would like to steal - one is driven by a man, the other by a woman, then they are much more likely to objectively set their sights on the woman driver, who they'll perceive to be the most vulnerable in this situation". He went on to suggest:"A women's handbag is also a very attractive proposition for thieves, mainly as they usually contain car keys".

Returning to the Home Office statistics and the following were disclosed;

*85% of modern vehicles (those registered after 1997) are driven away with keys.

*Of those, 37% of keys were obtained through burglary and 4% by robbery. (Including carjacking and premeditated thefts from bags)

*Car thefts involving keys (not obtained by burglary or robbery) often happen as a direct result of people leaving their keys in the car, or worse still, the ignition. Aswell as keys being copied or even being taken by someone the driver already knows.
