Claims and their Effect on Insurance Premiums

Statistics from Home Office's latest Crime Survey show that car crime, meaning that of and from vehicles is down 23% since 1999. The total number of claims is still high with car thefts amounting to 400,000 in 2003. Personal injury claims are also rising quickly and the sophistication of new cars mean that repair costs are much higher.

Repair costs and their impact on car insurance premiums

The motor insurance repair research centre at Thatcham is the body that sets the rating group for private cars and light vans. Through its research, Thatcham provides 70% of the information used in the rating of cars. Recent research shows that safety and security are advancing rapidly. For example it is now compulsory for all new cars to have immobilisers fitted.

Some manufacturers such as Volkswagen are looking to make it cheaper to repair their cars. The new VW Golf has module doors, in the event of damage, there is no need to replace the whole door, instead the outer skin panel can be detached for repair.

This makes commercial sense for the car manufacturers, for example Volvo drivers pay extra because of the reputation of Volvo as safe cars.
