Good news for crash fans - from star date 2009 all new cars within the European Union have to be fitted with a technically clever device that's programmed to automatically dial emergency services the instant you make it your business to plough into someone else's. Or, encourage a third party to wallop into you.
Ministers of the European Parliament have agreed in the aftermath of frenzied box-ticking procedures to make such a device compulsory kit and caboodle, to hopefully safeguard the accident prone.
EU bigwigs reckon the eCall sensor will slash emergency service response times by some 50%, and in doing so potentially save 2,500 lives each year.
How it works is this. The very nano-second the clueless barges into the unsuspecting, the eCall sensor is triggered, and instantaneously forwards the pinpoint location, physical speed and exacting owner details stored in the systems memory, to the nearest emergency call centre.
Costing estimated £2.5billion pounds sterling, the proposed schemes initial outlay will be offset by the forecast reduction of associated medical bills and the easing of congestion related to accident recovery. Alongside of the very human aspect. Which Girlmotor.com thinks is a price worth paying.
By and large motoring organisations offer their unswerving support for the initiative, one such group welcoming the move is accident charity BRAKE whose spokeswomen Sarah Fatica said this; "Anything which brings down the number of deaths on the roads each year is a good thing." Then of course there's the doubting Thomas's. Or Neil's in this case. Happy to cock his airborne leg on the roaring bonfire of technology and safety, Mr N Grieg of the AA Motoring Trust adds this cautionary note as he shakes; "The main problem with the system is the increased number of calls the emergency services will be getting. The government aren't convinced they'll be able to cope, which is one of the reasons they've ordered another report on the system."
Talk about lame excuses girlfriends. So unusual that from a man too. Surely putting an improved infrastructure in place between now and then and Bob's your uncle. And still will be thanks to the eCall should someone drive into him.
